However it is a business shrouded in mystique and it is very difficult to find out what it's all about or how to get started. In this six program series, The Crew unravels the mystery and explores the various technical positions that form a film production unit. Covering 18 different departments from Grips to Costume, Lighting to Makeup, the series vividly presents the jobs and lives of film production workers and explores the technical aspects of producing a film by talking to the people who make it happen. In each program, The Crew follows technicians from three various departments, in the milieu of a film set as they perform their jobs. The technicians talk candidly about hierarchy, job demands and the creative aspects of each position. They discuss how to get started, entry-level skills required, pay rates to expect and the personal pros and cons of working in "the business." Art Director: Reports to the production designer. The person responsible for designing and supervising the construction of all sets and scenery, overseeing the painting and dressing of all sets, and coordinating much of the logistical elements for the art department. Set Decorator: responsible for overseeing research, acquisition and allocation of items required to dress the various sets. Gaffer: The head of the lighting and electrical departments on-set. They determine electrical and power requirements and oversee all electrical aspects of the production, particularly those associated with lighting.
